Well, we all met up in beautiful aqueferous San Marcos, and got to stay with two amazingly funny and effin rowdy
Texan boys- Carl and Kyle... Amy came from San Luis Obispo, Lucie (and later Harlan) came by way of Philly. We're from all
over though.
We stayed much longer in San Marcos on account of all the fun we were having, going on joy rides and setting
off fireworks in the wee hours of the morn, hanging out at Kyle's recycling center which is full of all sorts of amazing and
beautiful rusty stuff, not to mention swimming with nutria and the Texas brown rice (seaweed grass) in the amazing cold
springs. We didn't want to leave!!
Lucie has been hearing so much about San Marcos since she met Carl about 5 years ago in Seattle... so it was
pretty cool to see it in its' full glory. Think beer barn, shaved ice snow-cones in all flavors (including dill pickles) and
a house that is disappearing off the street thanks to the amazing green thumb(s) of Kyle.
We were slated to leave for Corpus Christi and take off on our trip on June 1st. But after all our gear was assessed, broken
and fixed, moved around and packed and repacked, we all needed the extra time and didn't take off from Corpus until June 4th.
Yay for procrastination!!!

An amazing 5 month bike ride this is!!!!
Initially, our plan was to ride from Corpus Christi, Texas, to Panama City, Panama. We planned to ride along
the Gulf of Mexico side of Mexico, toward the Yucatan... and wanted to pass through every country in Central America. Our
goals have changed along the way though, and we have decided to loop back up through the other coast of Mexico from Guatemala.
We figure Guatemala to Panama can be another ride, sometime next year... maybe??
Coming back... There were many an exciting option. Talk of either heading back
toward Texas, to visit crazy friends there, or biking as far back up through the West coast of Mexico toward Arizona or California
if time allowed. Well, in the end we decided that we were going to ride up the west coast of Mexico after all, and head into
Arizona or Cali, hitch-hiking part of the northenrmost. Lucie needed to be back in Philly by mid December, but wanted to
head to recover and work in Cali first, and visit Anna "O" - the best Ocenas. And Amy was headed back to sunny San Luis
Obispo and then moving to Seattle with her buddy Cristifur.
There were a few places we wanted to visit specifically. One was Bikes to Chiapas, in Chiapas Mexico. They fix up and provide
bikes for the Zapatistas and local activists. The other is/was Maya Pedal, which is in Guatemala-- and they work with indigenous
groups of (women) farmers to build bicycle powered equipment, generators and milling machines and such.

We took parts of the Pan American highway, and tried to stay off main roads and out of the touristy areas...
The smaller country roads are sooooo much more scenic, beautiful and off the beaten path... But, we also had
to be realistic and stick to roads that were actually ride-able (even though our Schwalbe tires will withstand even the most
treacherous of roads, too much sand, rocks and mud just isn't fun).
Two wheels spinning, south south bound...
